Engineered marble is mostly resin; engineered quartz is mostly stone. Engineered marble — also sold as cultured marble — is roughly 75% polyester resin with about 25% crushed marble dust, cast in a mould and finished with a sprayed gel coat. Engineered quartz inverts that: around 90–93% ground natural quartz, compacted under vacuum and heat with a small fraction of resin. Both are manufactured, both are non-porous, and neither takes a hot pan. But quartz is a hard surface all the way through, while engineered marble depends on a thin gel coat that scratches to reveal a duller body beneath.

Why the names mislead
“Engineered marble” sounds like marble that has been improved. It is a cast polymer with marble dust in it — the stone is filler, not structure. “Engineered quartz” sounds synthetic, and it is 90% rock.
The industry uses both terms loosely, and the same product is sold as cultured marble, engineered marble, cast marble or marble composite depending on the retailer.
The gel coat is the whole story
Engineered marble is poured into a mould sprayed with a gel coat — a clear or pigmented polyester layer that gives the gloss and the waterproofing. Everything the material does well comes from that layer, and so does how it fails.
A scratch cuts through the coat into the duller cast body underneath and shows as a pale line. Light marks polish out; deeper ones need re-spraying. Quartz, being the same material throughout, has no layer to breach.
Which to buy
For a bathroom vanity, engineered marble: cheaper, and it can be moulded as one piece with the basin so there is no join to trap water.
For a dining or coffee table, quartz. A table top takes the abrasion that a gel coat handles worst.
