A stain is darker than the surrounding marble because something soaked into the stone’s pores. An etch is lighter or duller because acid corroded the polished surface itself. That single distinction decides what you do next: a stain comes out with a poultice, while an etch cannot be cleaned off at all and has to be re-polished. It also explains the most expensive misunderstanding in marble care — sealing prevents stains but does nothing whatsoever against etching, because the acid never needs to enter the stone to do its damage.
The test that settles it
Wet the mark with a little water. A stain stays visible and stays darker. An etch briefly disappears while wet — because the water fills the roughened surface and mimics the polish — then returns as it dries.
Why the difference matters so much
Marble is calcium carbonate. Acid dissolves calcium carbonate, and that reaction does not need the acid to soak in — it happens the moment the liquid touches the polished surface. This is why marble behaves so differently from granite or quartz, and why the fix for a dull mark is not a stronger cleaner.

Frequently asked questions
Can a spill cause both at once?
Yes. Red wine is the classic example — the acid etches the surface while the pigment stains the stone. Treat the stain first, then assess what is left underneath.
Will a sealer stop etching?
No. This is the most common misconception about marble. A sealer slows absorption into the pores; etching happens on the surface above them.
Is an etch permanent?
Not usually. Light etching responds to marble polishing powder. Deeper marks need a professional re-hone and polish.
