What thermal shock actually is
Thermal shock is not about the peak temperature but the speed of the change. A hot pan on a cold slab makes one small area expand while the stone around it does not, and a slab that already has an internal flaw or a thin section can crack along it. A thick, well-supported top is very unlikely to fail this way; a thin overhang near a seam is where it happens.
When to stop and call a professional
- The etch or scratch is deep enough to catch a fingernail.
- The damage covers a large area rather than one spot — patch-polishing a wide area leaves visible bright spots.
- The marble is honed and you want the mark gone. Polishing powder puts a shine where there was none.
- There is yellowing, cracking or chipping.
- The table is antique or the slab is thin — both raise the cost of a mistake well above the cost of advice.
Frequently asked questions
Will a hot mug leave a mark?
Not from heat. If a mug leaves a ring it is the drink — coffee stains, and anything citrus or fizzy etches.
Is engineered or cultured marble the same?
No, and this is important. Those are resin-based and far less heat-tolerant than natural stone. Treat them like quartz.
What about a marble pastry board?
